Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A good Meistersinger
A former reviewer really didn`t like this DVD. I must disagree with him. Yes, the Levine/Met are wonderful, and I hope to get back to it many times. But, this DVD is a very good alternative. I like Van Dam, and I think he is wonderful here. The other singers are also very good. So the staging isn`t exactly traditional, so what? It`s interesting, and doesn`t interfere with rhe music.
Sound and picture - very fine.

I hate to say this, but this performance is simply unacceptable.

The singers seem each to be in his/her own private universe. The conversations--Sachs and Eva (act 2), Sachs and Walther (act 3)--do not feel like conversations but like two selfish soloists duelling for attention.

The sets--especially the second and third act sets--are too abstract to give any sense of Nurnberg, showing no buildings or streets. When the crowd of angry townspeople appears at the end of ... Read More
