Editorial Review: Product Description: No Description Available. Genre: Feature Film-Comedy Rating: R Release Date: 30-MAY-2000 Media Type: DVD Amazon.com: This collection of satirical sketches about television was released in 1974, the heyday of obvious pop-culture humor along the lines Cheech and Chong. With Saturday Night Live still a few years away, Chevy Chase made an appearance here, and one can see the acute sensibility that would redefine television comedy in its early form. Some of the gags work well but most are pretty dispensable; some are a bit crude. On the plus side, it's nice to see Richard Belzer (from TV's Homicide) in his sharp-tongued, formative stage. While not brilliant, the film did serve as one influence on the rise of ironic humor in the '70s. --Tom Keogh Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Oh my was this bad.I have no idea how it came to be stuck in my head that the the Groove Tube was a "great, funny," movie. I saw it in 1974 at a drive in theatre and over the years had remembered it to be wonderful. Oh how wrong I was. I finally got a copy to show my wife this little "gem" of a movie from my youth. With the exception of about three mildly funny scenes, it was horrible. I don't even want to give this away to anyone as I would feel bad for wasting their time should they watch it. Rating: - "Kentucky Fried Movie" is still my all-time favorite, but...... "Groove Tube" certainly gives it a run for its money. The sketches here are perverse, gratuitous and completely over-the-top. The only reason it rates a couple clicks lower is because I thought the "Dealers" segment was a little too drawn out. Everything else was great- especially Koko The Clown, the cooking segment and the news program. The fact that Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" opens and closes the film scores bonus points with me. Rating: - I guess, you had to be there...Is this a GREAT movie? Um , Citizen Kane it is NOT. Is the humor PC? Ah, no... Well then, is it a funny movie anyway? Well, frankly...that depends on when you were born and where you were when it came out. Much like Kentucky Fried Movie this takes a jab at several topics "of it's day." If you happened to be around in 1970's USA, then you either saw this movie at the theater or wished you had... (And 1970's USA cannot be stressed enough.) Like KFM, some of the jokes have lost their ... Read More Rating: - It was a lot funnier 30 years agoI bought "The Groove Tube" as a gift for my husband. We did the grind house / cult movie / midnite movie circuit when we started dating 30 years ago. Although it was fun to see Chevy Chase and Richard Belzer (among others) when they were just starting their careers, this movie has lost something over time. It is no longer shocking or rebelious, just kinda silly and a little gross. For those who want a "blast from the past", Kentucky Fried Movie holds up much better! Rating: - A little dated but still has its momentsI first saw this movie when I was in college in the mid 1970s. It was pretty radical for its time as it predated the original Saturday Night Live. It is made up of a number of individual bits, most of which were topical at the time. There are references to 2001 A Space Odyssey, the Watergate hearings, Vietnam, counterculture drug dealers, etc. and features the first screen appearances of Chevy Chase and Richard Belzer. If you are nostalgic for those times and willing to suffer some misses along ... Read More Browse for similar items by category:
