Editorial Review: Description: Composed for the coronation of Charles X in Rheims Cathedral, this pièce de circonstance was to remain Rossini’s last Italian opera. It contains some of the most inspired and brilliant vocal writing the composer ever produced. Most experts and analysts agree that this is an unconventinal opera, light and ironic, festive and exuberant, with a plot as simple as it is extrvagant, a work full of musical references which almost turn it, very subtly, into a "metaopera," or an "opera about opera." The work features no true dramatic action, only a series of incidents, conversations and discussions involving a group of aristocrats from all over Europe who represent the nations ruled by the monarchies of the Holy Alliance. Viaggio is a beautiful opera, but this version is wrecked by incompetant amateur singers, no costumes, and no scenery. Il Viaggio is an opera that is seldom perform and that laid dormant for way over a century. How wonderful to hear it here, with excellent singers (though msot not quite known) who give life to an unknown opera by many. Rossini's vivid and florid score is one of his best. Read More Rating: - Lovely to look at, not to hearI must respectfully disagree with the previous reviewers in that I found the singing mostly inept. There have been three other telecasts in Europe with better singers; see if you can track them down.
