Tyler Perry mixes melodrama, social commentary, slapstick comedy, gospel music, and public health announcements in What's Done in the Dark... The lives of nurses, doctors, and patients of a city hospital get turned upside-down: A nurse discovers the doctor she's fooling around with is married; a faithful husband is diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease; the son of a nurse abandoned by her husband seeks desperate means to make money; and audience favorite Mr. Brown (David Mann), who's appeared in other Perry plays, comes to the hospital convinced that he's dying, dragging his long-suffering daughter Cora (Tamela Mann) along with him. What's Done in the Dark... is a production of a play, filmed before a live audience, so it doesn't have the visual dynamics of a movie, but the full-tilt, show-stopping gospel songs wouldn't have the same unbridled exuberance anywhere but on the stage. Perry's writing is rarely subtle, but What's Done in the Dark... is broader than usual--even longtime fans may find the cartoonish Nurse Trudy (D'Atra Hicks) a bit hard to take. Nonetheless, the play continues Perry's devotion to themes of love, respect, and the grace of God, as well as providing health information for the African-American community. And Mr. Brown, in his jarringly colorful clothes and silly malaprops, is a topnotch buffoon. His over-the-top theatrics are not for everyone, but fans won't be able to get enough of him. --Bret Fetzer

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A disappointing show. Over-the-top "ghetto"
I love Tyler Perry's work and finally broke down to buy this video last week-end.

What I liked:
Mr. Brown was OVER THE TOP! I laughed so hard at some of the scenes I had trouble going to sleep that evening. I mean crazy laughing. "Doc, you really need to make something of yourself."
Christian Keyes (is he for real???) and Brian Gentiles are...how shall I put it? Great to observe (of course, I mean their ACTING talents!)
The young nurse (sorry, I can't remember her ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - HAHAHA , VERY FUNNY YET GOSELP
IT IS VERY FUNNY BUT A LOT OF SONGS, I TOOK OFF ONE STAR BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF SONGS BUT IT STILL FUNNY THAT I REALLY DO ENJOYING. BUT I STILL WISH IT WENT ON LONGER SO I COULD SEE WHAT HAPPEN WHEN A MAN KISSED HER IN THE END. MR. BROWN WAS FUNNIER OF THE ALL THAT GOT ME FALL OFF , ON THE FLOOR AND LAUGHED HARD. MY FAMILY ASKED IF I WAS OKAY? BUT IT AIN'T BAD AS "MADEA'S CLASS REUNION" IF U ASKED THAT HAS MORE SONGS. THEY ARE THE WORSE ONE THAT HAS A LOT OF SONGS THAN THIS ONE . THIS MOVIE IS HAVING ... Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - If your a Tyler Perry fan than buy it.
I am a Tyler Perry fan so it was only natural to add this my collection. It's the usual TP stage fare. So if your a fan, then just buy it.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Mr. Brown Saved This Mess!
The ONLY reason to see this play is because of Mr. Brown. (Okay, and maybe the cute doctor.)

Three reasons I didn't like What's Done in the Dark: The health infomercial preaching, partially recycled script, and Nurse Trudy.

I get it! I get it! Diabetes, AIDS, STDs, cancer, heart problems, and high blood pressure=bad. Early check-ups, eating right, exercise=good. But I didn't tune in for the heavy-handed health sermon that saturated the whole play and made me roll my eyes and say, ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - What's Done In the Dark
Awesome play but you really don't expect less from Tyler Perry. Great cast although some of the acting seemed a little over dramatic. And at times some of the dialogue used was not original. Overall great. Fan of Tyler Perry an dhis people and will be for time to come.
