It is relatively quiet, just a loud humming when in operation. Overall, this is a strong and powerful machine that I am very happy with. Rating:  - I recommend it!Excellent shredder. The handle for lifting the shredder head is invaluable, because the piece is quite heavy and therefore bulky. It had a somewhat unpleasant (like machine oil) new-product smell for the first few days, but that has dissipated entirely. Capacity is excellent and it shreds credit cards well too. We have managed to jam it a couple of times. If the envelope is fairly thick, open it and feed a few sheets at a time. Duh! We've learned. Clearing the jam is straight forward. Destruction is total! I defy anyone to reassemble a document after it has gone through this machine. I'm sure it can be done, but someone would have to REALLY want to get that information, ...
