![]() Rating: - A splendid production of young Mozart's spirited SingspielI can't resist "Abduction from the Seraglio." I reach for it when I'm blue and a few bars into the overture, I'm smiling. I hear a young Mozart, full of fresh ideas. It was composed as a comic Singspiel. The characters sing and then they spiel (talk), sing and then spiel some more. It was a great night out for audiences of Mozart's day. They would socialize during the "spiel" and stop to listen when the singing started. This production from Florence, conducted by Zubin Mehta, is delightful. ... Read More Rating: - Could have been better,but unlike the previous reviewer,whom I usually am in agreement, it is not because of Eva Mei. In fact, I found her to be a delight along with Ciofi, whose acting I loved, and Rydl whose comic talents and booming voice just about stole the show. Mehta's conducting leaves something to be desired. I found him to lack the force and sensitivity to allow the audience to appreciate Mozart's great music. The libretto here is just so-so, but Mozart's refeshing idealism comes through ... Read More Rating: - It Has Its Moments But ...... the often acidulous shrillness of soprano Eva Mei (as Konstanze) pretty nearly ruins this Entführung for me. The high points are the funny and well-sung Osmin by Kurt Rydl and an excellent Belmonte sung by Rainer Trost. Pedrillo, sung by Mehrzad Montazeri, is attractive and fairly well sung. Patrizia Ciofi's Blonde is pert and fairly well sung, but her acting seems more stock than creative.
