Editorial Review: Product Description: Scientists in the antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 02/14/2006 Starring: Kurt Russell Keith David Run time: 109 minutes Rating: R Director: John Carpenter Amazon.com: Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Don't take Anything with youWhen I first saw this movie,it was a sneak preview with the premiere of Blade Runner, another Sci-Fi classic.I had gone to the movie alone, with my friend "Laughing Sam's Dice"...ok?Anyway,I was just melting into my seat in total connection with the first feature, and in all honesty partway into The Thing, for the first time in my movie career,I walked out,sat in the parking lot trying to compose myself to drive home.I have to consider this like an award level!Present day movie-goer's would consider ... Read More Rating: - A Remake That's Almost Better Than The OriginalIn 1982 John Carpenter remade one of the all time great, Sci-fi/Horror films"The Thing".This remake was in many ways scarier than the original, due to the way the creature could shape itself perfectly, like it's victim.A lot of paranoia, and A scary sense of not knowing true identity, also made this film scarier than the original. It has some great special effects, and A wonderful ensemble cast including Kurt Russell,Wilfred Brimley,Keith David,Richard Dysart, and David Clennon. What keeps this film from ... Read More Rating: - still scaryI was seven years old and forbidden to watch this movie. My parents went out and I watched it with the babysitter. Couldnt sleep for weeks and it remains one of only two movies ever to truly scare me. The other was a vincent price horror that I also wasnt supposed to watch. Its was so weird seeing it again 25 years later and I can see why a seven year old would be terrified. Rating: - It's a GOOD THING. It has some good suspense. Worth watching once.I was impressed and pretty scared when I first watched it on VHS a long time ago. However when I watched it again a couple of years ago, I found it not as good as Aliens 2. It still have some good suspenseful moments. The special effects are not as good as those of Aliens 2. It's definitely worth watching once. Rating: - The ThingYou never know who or what The Thing is! This movie is extremely creepy! Youve got to watch this with someone! A young Kurt Russell plays a very brave guy trying to help everyone. The Thing is too fast though and keeps taking control over things! Watch this terrifying tale! Browse for similar items by category:
