Editorial Review: Amazon.com essential video: A burnt-out architect (the peerlessly unhinged John Cassavetes) tries to get away from it all on a seemingly idyllic Greek isle in this extremely loose-limbed adaptation of Shakespeare's play. This pleasantly rambling, exquisitely lit portrayal of the middle-aged-crazies is rather broad even by writer-director Paul Mazursky's estimable standards, but Cassavetes's wholly unpredictable performance keeps the considerable preciousness from ever getting too thick. (He's aided by a uniformly wonderful cast, including Gena Rowlands, Susan Sarandon, Molly Ringwald, and especially Raul Julia as a wacked-out lech of a goatherd.) Not recommended for people trying to get out of reading the source material (for that, try the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet), but patient viewers will find plenty of rewards amid the schmaltz. --Andrew Wright Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Timeless storyI loved this film when I was 16, and I love it still, 26 years later! Cassavetes owes a lot to Shakespeare of course, whose stories are always timeless, but he and the actors, Susan Sarandon and Molly Ringwald in the beginning of their careers, create such a warm mood in the film. Rating: - CloyingThis has not aged well in its last 25 years. There is no heat whatsoever between the aging John Cassavetes and the young Susan Sarandon. It makes no sense for her instant attraction to him. Likewise, the debut of Molly Ringwald is beyond saccharinely cloying. Bad, bad acting, even if she was only a young teen. Raul Julia saves the day a bit as the wacky goatherd, but it's still a stereotyped role. Not worth the bother, and it's too long, besides. Rating: - One of the Great MoviesIn the early 80's I read a glowing review of this film in Rolling Stone Magazine. Since it promised Susan Sarandon (who I only new as Janet Weiss from Rocky Horror) in a bathing suit, it made the must see list. I saw it with a date in a Gainesville, Fla movie house that actually served beer by the pitcher. The second pitcher was empty just about the same time the goats began flying overhead in time to Liza Minelli's rendition of "New York, New York", and I realized I was watching something special. ...
