Rating:  - "The first dead man on Omaha Beach must be a sailor!" ...and James Garner is a sailorPaddy Chayefsky's fluent, clever, pungent polemics have always seemed more than a little stagy to me. If there was an opportunity for Chayefsky to shake his finger at us and give us a speech, he couldn't resist. The Americanization of Emily, a clever romantic drama about war, heroics and practicality, is a good example. A romance is thrown in for good measure. I bought this because of the plot, James Garner and Julie Andrews. The director was not up to this potential. Rating: - Stumbled upon this one and so very grateful for itI have always been a HUGE Julie Andrews but mainly because of the obvious box office successes she had with Poppins, Sound of Music and a bit less with Victor/Victoria. Doing some research on her entire body of work lately I discovered some footage of this movie and was instantly intrigued. I was marvelously surprised by The Americanization of Emily. Read More Rating: - a good war film, no matter what side you takeBeing a Julie Andrews fan under 30, I wasn't alive to see most of her films the first time around. I have seen them all, bar two. She isn't the greatest actor; we must all admit that. Saying this, despite being only her second on-screen role -- filmed between "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music" -- "The Americanization of Emily" is by far her best film.
